OWWL blog:

This week in OWWL we focused on feeding birds and celebrating Mother’s Day and other significant people in our lives.

For Mother’s Day, the children talked about their mummies, grandmas, and other special people. We shared what they do for us and what we love about them. The children then helped to pot up pansies to create Hardmoor’s Flower Shop. Families were invited to buy a plant for £1, either to give as a gift to someone special or to keep at home in their own garden. Parents really loved this idea and all of the plants sold. Some families kindly donated more than the suggested £1, which will go towards our garden fund.

We also continued learning about caring for wildlife by feeding the birds. The children made several different bird feeders, including Cheerio feeders by threading cereal onto pipe cleaners, as well as making fat balls and seed pots filled with lard and bird seed to hang outside. We explored bird books together and linked this learning to maths by counting Cheerios onto the hungry birds’ spots in a fun counting activity.

We looked closely at the daffodils and noticed how they have changed as they grow. Using this as inspiration, the children created flower paintings with the daffodils as the centre focus. The following day they revisited their observations and used felt tips to draw their own daffodil pictures.

In the garden, we harvested more turnips to sell and were very excited to discover broccoli florets growing on our plants. This sparked lots of discussion as the children observed the changes happening in our garden and continued to develop their understanding of how things grow.
