OWWL Weekly Overview:
This week, our learning has focused on minibeasts, building on our previous topic of food chains. The children explored a variety of engaging activities to deepen their understanding and curiosity about the natural world.
We began by investigating minibeasts in a tuff tray filled with soil, encouraging hands-on discovery and discussion. The children also enjoyed looking through minibeast books and taking part in an exciting minibeast hunt, where they searched for different creatures in the outdoor environment. Alongside this, we read and shared facts about minibeasts, helping to develop their knowledge and vocabulary.
A particular point of interest was learning about ladybirds in the UK. The children discovered that most have seven spots, which led into a maths activity. They counted and added spots to ladybird templates and, where appropriate, matched numerals to the correct number of spots, supporting their early counting and number recognition skills.
On Tuesday, we had a special chicken care day. The children had the opportunity to gently stroke and cuddle the chickens, check for eggs, and help clean out their sleeping area. This hands-on experience supported their understanding of caring for animals and responsibility.
We also spent time in the polytunnel harvesting broccoli and chard. The produce has been placed outside for families to take in exchange for a small donation, encouraging community involvement and awareness of where food comes from.
It has been a busy and enriching week full of exploration, care, and learning!
