OWWL blog:

This week in our OWWL sessions, our focus has been on flowers, with a special emphasis on sunflowers. We have been busy planting sunflowers in pots and throughout our beds, as well as sowing a variety of other flower seeds to encourage a vibrant and colourful growing space in the coming weeks.

Alongside planting, we have continued to take good care of our environment by maintaining regular watering routines across the centre, ensuring all plants are well supported as they begin to grow.

We have also been thinking about the wildlife that shares our allotment. This week, we spent time feeding local wildlife and setting up a camera to help us observe what animals are visiting our space now that the season is changing. We are looking forward to discovering what we capture.

In addition, we have been getting creative by decorating our planter number signs using coloured sand. These will be finished and ready to attach next week, helping us keep our growing areas organised while adding a bright, personal touch to the allotment.

Today, we are also harvesting peas, radishes and carrots. These fresh produce items will be put out for donations this week, supporting our community and sharing the results of our hard work.

We have unfortunately had a few windy days, limiting our time outside. On one of these days we took the opportunity to feed and handle our stick insects. Children described the feeling of them walking on their skin as 'velcrowish' and 'tickly'.

Overall, it has been a productive and engaging week, combining planting, care for our environment, wildlife observation, creativity and harvesting.
