Owwl blog:
Last week during OWWL, the children took part in a range of outdoor and nature-based learning experiences. They spent time in the woods exploring the environment, observing birds and working collaboratively to construct a large bird’s nest on the ground using natural materials.
The children learned about plant growth by sowing peas in ziplock bags with cotton wool. These were attached to the window so that the children can observe the growth process over time. We explored the life cycle of a pea, discussed what seeds and plants need in order to grow, and the children recorded their learning by drawing the pea life cycle.
In the allotment, the children helped to refill the bird feeding table, put food out for the fox, and fill a bird feeder with soft materials to support birds in nest building. They also created bird and squirrel feeders using string or pipe cleaners and Cheerios.
Bug exploration was another key focus this week. The children searched in the mud and discovered worms, centipedes, and millipedes. They extended this learning by making pipe cleaner spiders, reading non-fiction bug books, and exploring the smaller woodland area.
Additionally, Ian and I have installed a tarpaulin to restrict visibility into the allotment area from neighbouring properties.
