OWWL blog:
This week our OWWL sessions have been full of nature, discovery, and some lovely eco-friendly learning!
The children have been busy making seed paper, which sparked lots of great conversations about recycling and reusing. We talked about how old paper can be given a brand-new purpose, and the children loved knowing that their creations can eventually be planted to grow something new. Alongside this, we reused toilet roll middles as plant pots, another great way to reduce waste while gardening.
Our preschool children planted cucumber and pepper seeds, carefully filling their pots and gently sowing the seeds. We spent time comparing the two different seeds, noticing their shapes and colours and talking about how they might grow into very different plants. There was lots of thoughtful discussion and curiosity as the children shared their ideas and observations.
As the big woodland has become flooded, we explored the smaller woods this week instead. Even so, there was plenty to discover. While exploring, we spotted a very interesting bird’s nest, nestled under leaves a few feet up our very big tree. This led to calm discussions about birds, habitats, and the importance of respecting wildlife and observing from a distance.
Overall, it’s been a week full of hands-on learning, teamwork, and connection with the natural world. We’re looking forward to watching our seeds grow and continuing our outdoor adventures next week!
